On a single-column page that is invisible. On anything with two columns, a sidebar or a pull-quote, naive extraction interleaves them: you get the first line of the left column, then the first line of the right, and the result reads like nonsense while every word is technically present. So the page layout gets read first, blocks ordered, and columns kept separate. The second thing is your log. If a page is a scan rather than real text, recognition does not fail loudly — it produces confident errors in exactly the characters that matter: 1 and l, 0 and O, rn and m. Those spots go into the log with page and line, rather than being silently handed to you as clean text. Paragraph breaks, spelling and punctuation stay as in the source, including the typographic quotes and dashes that usually turn into question marks. Send two files, ideally including your most awkward layout, and I will return them with the log before you commit. One question: do all the PDFs carry a real text layer, or are some of them scans?
