I'm backfilling a blog with news items. I have hundreds of scanned newspaper stories that are to be converted to plain text, proof-read and corrected, and used to create a tagged and thumbnailed WordPress blog post.
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for your interest. I thought it would be helpful to give you a clearer idea of the scale and nature of the task...
My home town of Herne Bay in Kent (UK) has two local papers - the Herne Bay Times and the Herne Bay Gazette - and the vast majority of the items to be transcribed come from these two papers.
You will find a fairly representative sample of one week's worth of articles (17 scans) at:
I currently have about 3,700 scans to be processed, and will be adding a further 800-1000 as I scan in further back copies of the papers. It is likely that once the backlog has been cleared, there would be a continuing lower intensity role processing each week's new news.
I use a file naming convention for the scanned images of YYYY-MM-DD-Z-n where Z is G or T (to signify Gazette or Times) and n is a number generated automatically by the scanning process.
I'm not interested in any of the advertisements.
All the posts created are to be tagged "YYYY-MM-DD" according to the filename they are created from.
All posts are to have a credit at the bottom in the form (in this case) "Herne Bay Times, 25th Nov 2010", or "Herne Bay Gazette, 25th Nov 2010".
All the posts are to have the jpeg they're taken from as a thumbnail in the bottom left of the post, captioned "HB Gazette 2014-11-25" or "HB Times 2014-11-25"
On the letters pages (e.g. 2010-11-25-G-00004, 2010-11-25-G-00005, 2010-11-25-G-00008) each letter should be a post, tagged with "Letters" and the author's name. If there are several letters under one heading, the posts created should be entitled "Shared letters title (1 of 4)", "Shared letters title (2 of 4)", and so on... doesn't happen often, though.
The editorials should be tagged "Editorial".
The names of people and streets/roads/buildings mentioned in the article should be used as tags. Any intelligent tagging you can add beyond that would be welcome!
You may wish to revise (or withdraw) your bids in the light of this additional information.
If you have any further questions, I believe you can contact me through this website.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I shall be closing this project before its completion date, and reopening it as a new project (with the same name and details) in the next price bracket up - the £250-£750 range. I think this is a more realistic price range, given the quantity and quality of work I'm looking for.
Hope to see you on the new project :-)
