Comparative Literary Analysis Presentation

Purpose For this assignment, you will respond to one of the two prompts below and make a thoughtful argument about The Shahnameh and the Sundiata. You will then present your argument to your instructor via a PowerPoint presentation of 8-10 slides and a brief 3-5-minute video overview of that PowerPoint presentation. Skills to Acquire This assignment will help you master important skills necessary to performing writing tasks in college and engaging with ideas and values that are foundational to a well-rounded university education. Two of these skills are to: LO1: Analyze themes and ideas pertinent to World Literature from ancient times through the early-modern period. LO2: Demonstrate the ability to compare, contrast and understand diverse literary texts, authors, and genres. Task Part 1 Choose ONE of these two prompts. Mentors: The heroes of The Shahnameh and Sundiata, Rustem and Sundiata, learn from many others during their journeys. Choose one character whom you believe to be each hero's most influential mentor and explain what each mentor teaches and why those lessons are so significant. Are there any cultural values that Rustem and Sundiata can't be taught by their mentors and must learn on their own to become successful leaders? How do these two mentors in the epics compare to similar figures in your own life? OR Antagonists: Select one antagonist from The Shahnameh and one from Sundiata. Study, compare, and contrast the two characters. What significant choices do each of these characters make, and why? In what ways do they adhere to the established values and norms of their societies, and in what ways do they break from them? What price (if any) do they pay for the choices they make? What did you learn from these characters that you did not learn from the heroes? Part 2 Create a PowerPoint/slide* presentation of your argument. Include both text and images that illustrate and enhance the argument you are making. Be sure to include and cite quotations from each text that support your claims. Use the following as an outline of what to include: Start with a title page that includes your name, the title of the presentation, the date, the course, the name of your professor. (1 slide) Explain the general topic and put forth a thesis, an argument that brings both epics into conversation with each other. (1 slide) Apply that topic to both The Shahnameh and to Sundiata. Give specific examples and quotations from the texts to support your analyses. Use in-text citations in MLA format for the quotations, and be sure to include page numbers from the texts included in this course. (5-7 slides) Conclude your argument. How does your argument help us as readers to better understand these two epics? (1 slide) Your final slide should be your Works Cited slide, with both texts in MLA format. (1 slide). *Note: Be sure to request permission from your professor if you would like to use a different presentation software. Whatever you present must be saved and submitted as an acceptable file type (see below) to complete this assignment. Part 3 Create a 3-5 minute video. Your video should be of yourself speaking, and it is not necessary to show your PowerPoint slides as a part of your video. During your video, please don't read each slide or your notes out loud. Instead, trust that your reader has already looked through your slides, and use the time to discuss what you yourself found compelling about this project. For example: What do you feel is the most fascinating part of your presentation, and why? What do you understand about these epics now that you didn't before you worked on this project? If you had time to continue working on this project, what might you explore next? Submission Instructions Identity Verification Take a photo of your student ID or state-issued ID and submit it to this assignment folder. You can cover your address, ID number, or other identifying information with a post it note or sticker, but your face and name should be clear. (Note: Be sure the photo of your ID is in .jpg format. Newer Apple formats such as HEIC will not display in GoVIEW.) Recording & Submitting Your Video Your video should be submitted through YuJa. You can record directly in YuJa or upload a previously recorded video (i.e., with your phone, tablet, etc.) to YuJa. Please refer to the Recording & Uploading Videos with YuJa instructions. Please do not use the "Add File" option for your video file. Your video submission should be done through YuJa. Alternatively, you may upload it to YouTube and provide a link to the video. Instructions for using YouTube are also included in the above link. PowerPoint/Slide Presentation You must submit your slide presentation to this drop box as an acceptable file type: .PPT, .PDF, .DOC, .DOCX.
