Tax Collected at Source (TCS) for Indian Freelancers
Changes to the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) in India mean that, from 1 October 2018, online marketplaces with an e-commerce component are responsible for collecting a small portion of the transaction value for services supplied online from India and remitting it to the government.
The new Tax Collected at Source (TCS) rule is a component of the CGST. It requires Freelancer.com to assume responsibility for collecting a 1 percent deduction from the pre-tax net value of taxable services supplied through the Freelancer.com marketplace by freelancers in India.
To ensure we are all able to comply with the new TCS rules, India-based freelancers are required to provide their GST Identification Number (GSTIN). Those who are not registered for a GSTIN can be exempted from the TCS requirements, but a legitimate reason must be provided.
To add your GSTIN on the Settings page, you can do so from the banner while logged in to your Freelancer.com account.
Or, by following the steps below:
1. Click your profile picture thumbnail from the main menu bar, and choose Settings.
2. Click Payment & Financials.
3. Go to Tax Information section.
4. Enter your GST Identification Number.
5. Click Save GSTIN.
If you are not registered for GSTIN:
1. Go to the Tax Information section of Payment & Financials settings.
2. Click the Are you exempt from GST? link.
3. Select a reason for not having GSTIN, and provide more details.
4. Click Save Reason.
If you have not provided your GST details, you will be required to add them to complete your withdrawal requests.
We have a different registered GST Number for each state in India. You may need our registered GST Number in your state for tax returns and tax refund purposes:
