Everything's designed. Few things are designed well.

I'm Timo Salomäki (Hanki Design), an avid developer/designer hybrid based in Switzerland. I'm a mobile and full-stack development expert specializing in mobile and desktop development projects for Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. In addition to the mobile platforms, I like to dive deeper into web and API projects with various technologies. My understanding of the overall architecture of a modern software application and a good grasp of design patterns and best practices ensures that I can work from the architecture level down to getting my hands dirty with coding if needed. Last but not least, my UX and UI skills ensure that a project is taken from start to finish with high quality in both the backend and frontend.

Domaining Studio

In the end of 2012 I was contacted by a Microsoft Technical Evangelist, Drazen Dodik, who I knew after attending a few hackathons and events organized by Microsoft. He wanted me and my regular team mate to work on a mobile application project for a major Finnish airline, Finnair. We had quite a tight schedule and there was only a few weeks to develop a full application, but with design aid from Nordkapp and support from both Drazen and Finnair, we were able to deliver a working application in only two months.

After the project I was contacted by Maxine Ambrose, who was writing a case-study for Microsoft’s internal use. Later my interview material for also used in two publicly available articles below:

Finnair's Windows Phone Application

zParticle is a multi-platform particle system supporting both MonoGame and XNA. While some particle systems are designed to simulate as many particles as possible, my system is designed to give good performance bundled with great looks. The multi-threaded architecture allows smooth 60 fps simulations of tens of thousands of simultaneous particles, and controlling the whole system is a breeze with numerous modifiers. Developers can also customize all the existing emitters, modifiers and particle types to create something unique. The first public release is coming soon (as of May, 2014) so feel free to ask me more if you are interested in trying this out as soon as possible.

Multi-platform particle engine for MonoGame

I developed this application for the Do Good Hackathon 2012 with a friend of mine, David Davenne. The application idea and prototype developed in less than 24-hours got us a second place in the Open Data -category. Here’s what the jury had to say about Help Your City:

"The runner up in Open Data category is the application Help Your City by Team Crypt. The Jury felt that the crowd-souring citizen participation idea is great that can lead to faster improvements in trash and crime reduction. The app was novel and the design aspects looked inspiring. Please consider submitting your application to AppCampus. The runner up will get € 1 000. Congratulations!"

Help Your City Windows Phone Application

This is a Subsonic Design poster I created from scratch using only Photoshop's native tools. Everything from the chip stack to metal looking text has been designed carefully using lots of layers, shapes and layer styles.
