Ultrasonically Assisted Drilling of CFRP Composites

European Conference on Composite Materials
In this paper, numerical and physical experiments are carried out in drilling of CFRP composite for a set of machining parameters, using CD and UAD techniques. The effect of cutting speed on the drilling thrust force is studied for both techniques. A 3D finite element model of conventional drilling of CFRP laminate is developed and later extended to capture dynamic frictional characteristics of UAD.

Numerical Analysis of Damage in Machining

Solid State Conference
......Thus, the machining process not only affects the overall hole quality but also initiates discrete damage phenomena such as micro-cracking, matrix burning; delamination and fiber pull out in the specimen. Moreover, the cutting edges of a drill wear dramatically out due to presence of highly abrasive fibers in the matrix, resulting in increased thrust forces that can cause interply delamination.

Machining towards Improved Structural Integrity in Carbon/Epoxy Composites

Engineering Materials Journal
Recently, our in-house experiments of UAD in CFRP composites demonstrated remarkable reductions in levels of thrust force and torque (average force reductions in excess of 60%) when compared to CD with the same machining parameters. 3D Finite Element (FE) models of CD and UAD techniques for a CFRP laminate were developed using a general-purpose FE software ABAQUS/Explicit and validated using experimental results.....

Experimental investigation on shape evolution in metal forming hybrid process

Scientific.Net - Journal
....of single to multiple passes of shear forming, spinning and flow forming. The research has proven that the spinning, shear forming and flow forming can be combined using a single machine with a single set of tooling and single process cycle. Circumferential and axial cracking was observed in initial set of trials which were eliminated using a series of experiments.

Ultrasonically Assisted Drilling of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics

Solid State Phenomenon - Journal
We use ultrasonically assisted drilling (UAD) to reduce the axial thrust forces. In this study, experiments are conducted in two stages. A reduced thrust force is experienced in case of UAD when compared to CD. At the second stage, drilling dynamics, i.e. feed speed, is changed along with the improvement of the transducer, and an enormous amount of force reduction (>80%) is observed in case of UAD (as compared to CD).

Experimental & Numerical Investigations in Conventional and Ultrasonically Assisted Drilling of CFRP

Procedia CIRP - Journal
Conventional Drilling (CD) of CFRP induces high stresses in the vicinity of the drilled hole; along with high thrust forces on a drilling tool. An advanced drilling technique known as Ultrasonically Assisted Drilling (UAD) has been used to demonstrate its several advantages over CD including a reduced thrust force. A 3D finite element (FE) models simulating CD and UAD techniques for drilling in CFRP laminates were developed using the general-purpose FE software ABAQUS/Explicit.

Drilling in carbon/epoxy composites: Experimental investigations and finite element implementation

Journal of Composite Manufacturing
Drilling carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs) is typically cumbersome due to high structural stiffness of the composite and low thermal conductivity of plastics. Resin-rich areas between neighbouring plies in a laminate are prone to drilling-induced delamination that compromises structural integrity. Appropriate selection of drilling parameters is believed to mitigate damage in CFRPs.

Cutting forces in ultrasonically assisted drilling of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics

Conference Series
Ultrasonically assisted drilling (UAD) is a non-traditional hybrid machining process, which combines features of conventional drilling and vibratory machining techniques to obtain remarkable improvements in machinability of advanced materials. The experiments are conducted on carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) at a feed rate of 16 mm/min. In this study, a thrust force reduction in excess of 60% is observed in UAD when compared to conventional drilling (CD).

Numerical Analysis and Noise Detection for Design Optimisation of an Ultrasonic Transducer

Journal of Physics
The characteristics of a Langevin transducer are studied using a combination of numerical and experimental techniques, which reveal the effect of minor design changes on its performance. The experiments were performed using a microphone and voice-recording software capable of measuring frequencies up to 41 kHz; the obtained signal was analysed in MATLAB. The transducer system was optimised using the results of noise detection and FEA.

Effect of ultrasonically-assisted drilling on carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics.

Journal of Sound and Vibration
This research focuses on the effect of ultrasonically-assisted drilling (UAD) on carbon fibre-reinforced plastics. High-frequency vibration was used to excite a drill bit during its standard operation. An extensive experimental study of drilling forces, temperature, chip formation, surface finish, circularity, delamination and tool wear was conducted using ∅3 mm drill and presented here. UAD showed a significant improvement in drill quality when compared to conventional drilling processes.
