Since completing his Architectural studies in 1992, Alan began a part time career in 3d and 2d animation while working as an architect in Johannesburg. His first major client was a 2d animated insert for Coca Cola through the Gatehouse (JHB), followed by graphic treatments for the award winning documentary “We’ve got the Power”, directed by Lisa Brittan for Devereux Harris. Since moving to Cape Town, he worked as a full time digital artist for Intellvision post production facility, where he was responsible for motion graphics design and animation on a number of TVC’s, before leaving in 2000 to pursue a career as a freelance animator. Alan also has extensive experience working in the mobile content arena. In 2001 he joined iTouch Labs, Cape Town as a the sole content creator, producing animated mobile content, for global customers. After leaving iTouch in 2003, he did further contract work with Scan Mobile in the UK, producing content for their clients, which included MTV Europe and MTV Asia. in 2005, Alan was a part time lecturer at City Varsity , teaching the Introductory 3d Animation course to students. In the same year he completed work as lead animator on “Beyond Freedom”, an animated documentary looking at the life journeys’ of four individuals from diverse backgrounds, during the last ten years of democracy in South Africa. The documentary was subsequently selected for the short film competition at the 2006 Berlinale Film Festival. Alan currently runs Arf Studio, an animation and design studio in Cape Town, whose aim is to focus on projects which enable a collective exchange of skills, styles and knowledge between both experienced and emerging animators, resulting in a fresh, unique and contemporary style. Current projects include character animation for an interactive online game, a CDROM for an interactive project on sustainable development as well as script development and character design for an animated adventure story.
