It is defined as the continuous increased blood pressure above the normal levels2 due to narrower arteries and increased blood pumped out of the heart3. The normal blood pressure reading is 120/80mmHg or less4 where the values are the systolic and diastolic pressure5 respectively. Any reading above 140/90mmHg is therefore hypertension5. Hypertension is a long term condition and comes with long term health implications which include ruptured blood vessels as well as cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, myocardial infarction and ischaemic heart disease6 as well as other diseases such as chronic kidney disease7 and they highlight the necessity for treatment.
