Instead, with the knowledge I have, I try to anticipate how the user will really use the product, how he would expect it to work and be organized. I follow a design process described in Jesse Garrett's book "Elements of User Experience". At the level of strategy, I discuss business and users goals with the client. Then I use my knowledge of Information Architecture and Interaction Design to determine what features and content the project should have to meet those goals and structure the features and content in a way the user would expect them to be. Then I build an interactive prototype - a set of detailed wireframes of every page, linked to each other and imitating the behavior of the end product. I use Axure for this purpose. When approved, the wireframes should go to a visual designer. This process is much better than putting visual design first and thinking how you should make something eye-catchy, before knowing how exactly it will be inside and how users will interact with it. It's better that I work on a project early on, when there is only a concept. This way I can put your project onto the right track from the beginning.
