Big Bad Battle - Orchestral Composition
This composition was inspired by the rhythms and musical instruments of Polynesia, combined with a string orchestra and the concept of a great battle in mind. The 9/8 time signature is uncommon in contemporary western music and is can contribute to feelings of unease or tension as it doesn't resolve as neatly as 4/4, 3/4, or 6/8. Due to instrument limitations I had to be slightly creative and find an instrument which emulated a battle horn, and I eventually settled on a virtual double bass. For this purpose the sound worked well, and between the dissonant violin and relentless cello arpeggios it contributed greatly to the creation of tension. A second, somewhat hopeful or even triumphant section was added as if to suggest a glimmer of hope in an otherwise hopeless battle, though this atmosphere is quickly quashed as it loops back to its previous state.
