One million polyethylene bags are used throughout the world every minute. Pollution According to data cited in National Geographic, of the more than 500 billion polyethylene bags used each year, millions never make it to the landfill. The wind catches them, and they travel remarkable journeys only to land snagged in a tree, caught in a chain-link fence or stuck in a drainage ditch. Such extended use and subsequent litter led several countries around the world to ban the use of polyethylene bags.
