**AIRBUS CONTEST**: Design a Grasping System

  • Status: Closed
  • Prêmio: $1500
  • Inscrições Recebidas: 13
  • Vencedor: Calixdesign

Síntese do concurso

The goal of this contest is to design a grasping system that will be attached to a robot and can grasp items available in Airbus Warehouse. The grasping system will be mounted to a robot that can move in 3 dimensions. The grasping system receives the command based on a vision system (designed separately) which tells how to pick up the item. A separated document provides the figure of item that needs to be taken. Another document provides the guidelines on how your design must be presented and submitted

Click on the links below to see detailed design instructions, constraints and solution template for this problem. Please ensure you also read the T&Cs of the challenge within the attachment.

Challenge rules:
The prize will be awarded for the technically feasible solution, submitted by the contest deadline.
No working prototype is required for submission, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design (i.e. comply with all requirements).
Only complete submission packages will be evaluated.

Hey CH I had a few questions, would appreciate it you reply at the earliest. Bin picking robots are already available in the market, why aren't you using something available off the shelf or if you have then what has been your experience with them. If you could list their shortcomings and deficiencies then that would help us to develop a solution better suited to your needs. Thanks

Hi, thanks for the response. Few more questions
      1) how fragile the items are? do we need to consider that?
      2) will it be feasible to apply a pneumatic solution? or it needs to be electrical actuator based only?
3)preference to multiple picking at a time or single?
      4) what i see in the attached document is the components are arranged in a big box with parts separated in smaller boxes. I suppose this will not be the case for the final usage where all the parts will be in one single box mixed together and vision system is required to identify them or they will be segregated similar to how they are shown in the document.

      1) None of the items are fragile, you don't have to consider that
      2) Yes, it's possible.
      3) Multiple picking
      4) For the challenges, they are segregated. The final usage is to be confirmed.

So we are only required to make a patent for the grasping system/mechanical part. Coding of the visual recognition of the desired item will be done in another contest?

Yes, you're only required to design the grasping system. The visual recognition challenge is in another contest: https://www.freelancer.com/contest/AIRBUS-CONTEST-Design-an-Intelligent-Vision-System-IVS-1541035

An internship would be a better prize. you're asking a lot of people to risk a lot of time for an engineering task they might not even win. you could at least make the prize worth it.

also, could you describe the shape (rather than just the dimensions)?

Any engineer with experience in DFA can tell you that there are different picking strategies for different shapes.

      Hi David,
      I have a question.
Is it necessary to pick 1 item every time the gripper receive (Pick command)?
Or it can do bulk picking. pick multiple items, Without giving any feed back on how many item been picked.

      Hi Abdelrahman,
It's not necessary to pick 1 item, you can pick any number of item as long as your system recognize number of picked item

I think they just need a concept with some technical details as a prove.
But yes it is still very low. to give them new product! they must pay for that. #increaseprize
