I need some Graphic Design for a book cover for a Young Adult Fantasy novel

I am looking for a cover illustrator to design covers for my nine book Fantasy series. This competition is for a rough draft of the cover for book 1 with the selected entry to be developed to the final draft for an extra payment and hopefully to continue for the full series. I need a design that can be modified to fit all nine covers to give continuity to the look of the series.

I am publishing by e-book so I need it to look appealing at a thumbnail size and in black and white as well as colour. The book titles are colour themed with the first book called "A Swirl of Purple". Chapter 1 of the book is attached to give you an idea of the characters. In my mind's eye I see the cover as having the three children standing in front of the purple vortex, but I am not limiting entries to that and will go with whatever cover appeals to me most. I have added character profiles for the main characters from book 1. Full draft of book 1 available on request.

The book is going to be available as print on demand as well as ebook so I will need the spine and back included in the cover design. It is a large book ~500 pages so the spine will have room for creativity.

Have added as it looks like my brief was a bit sparse on detail. Needs to have:
Purple as the dominant feature.
At least a nod to the fantasy genre.
Back and spine included in design even if it only shows rough design and text placement.
Would prefer a character on the front but will consider a design without one.
The vortex is air magic, it needs to have an airy feel.

My previous cover illustrator had to quit as she was finding it to stressful balancing wedding plans with work, and unfortunately it was my cover and not the boyfriend who was ditched. I have attached her design below. She didn't follow my brief exactly, not happy with the picture of Amy, I think she looks sad more than determined and don't like the ghostlike quality. Would like to see if the vortex could look more air-like if you go down this path. Don't feel you have to stick with this idea, it is just to provide a starting point if you are a bit stuck. Probably best not to look at it until well after you get your own ideas down if you are not.

For those who want to plan ahead and are looking for a design they can easily modify for future books in the series, the current working titles are:
A swirl of purple
The depths of dark blue
A wide brown land
Trial by fire red
Something to do with green probably, stuck on this one
Collage in grayscale
Land of rainbow gold
Garments white as snow
Cloak of blackest night

I will try to give feedback to each entry and am more than happy for people to alter their entry until the closing date or a winner selected.

Haven't actually got around to thinking about the paper copy other than that there will be one. Will be done through createspace.
