FILM CRITIQUE Select a theatrical, non-documentary (Hollywood) film on topics or events occurring during the period that we are studying (American History to 1877.) Watch the film closely and critically, thinking about the point or points of view and historical interpretations being presented to you, and how they relate to the way the same events are described in your readings. As you watch, it is advisable to take notes on things you feel to be important. Also, you may want to search the Internet using “writing a historical film critique” or similar words. Additional background research may be required as well. Some questions to consider as you view the film: • Does the film depict history in a way that matches your perceptions of the events and characters depicted? • Is there a noticeable slant or bias to the way history is being depicted, and if so, what is it? • Are efforts made, in your opinion, to give a visually accurate view of the time period of the film (clothing, architecture, machinery, tools, weapons, etc?) • Do the characters behave in a way that you would consider to be appropriate or typical for their time? • What did you take away (that is, learn) from the film? • How did you like the film (or not) After viewing the film, write a 2 ½ to 3 page paper (700-900 words, 12 pt font, double spaced) addressing the questions given above. Give examples from the film to illustrate your points. It is VERY advisable to wait to do this assignment until after you have read about and attended class on the actual historical events in the film, unless you have already studied them on your own. You may need to do some outside research to be able to assess the film accurately. Remember that you are writing a critique and not just a report, so do not spend a lot of time describing the content of the film, as I have already seen all of these. If you do not know any particular film about something you are interested in, I would be happy to make suggestions to you. Bear in mind that there is not necessarily a film on every event. If you have a film in mind, please get my approval before you use it. Remember, do not pick a documentary such as those produced by The History Channel or PBS. While these are excellent, that is not the purpose of this assignment.
