Currently an interface to the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) of SATA hard drives is not supported under Linux.
If anyone is willing and able to create a daemon that will allow the use and access to SMART for SATA drives, we will fund the project.
Initially we would only require a limited number of features within the SMART reporting capabilities, namely a notification of read/write errors beyond a ceratin threshold (settable), temperature info and disk failure.
