Edit a scanned PDF - trim & split pages

I have a scan of a book in Pdf format. The book has been physically scanned 2 pages at a time. This makes the pdf awkward to read on a Kindle.
I need this pdf edited so that there is only one page of the book per page in the pdf.
The pages will need to be split along the centre line of the physical scan.
I will also need the pages to be cropped so that there are no large white spaces on the sides or top or bottom.
This task should be easy for you to automate but you will need to check the results at various points in the book to ensure that none of the text or diagrams have been cut off.
