ADO Crashes

This application (written in VB6) accesses a remote MySQL database using ADO. It works fine in the development environment (IDE) and works when compiled. When I install it on any computer without the VB6 development evnironment, it crashes when I try to establish a connection. Even when I set error trapping, the whole application crashes with various error messages from "Catastrophic Error" to the .net "program tried to terminate in an unusual way". I know that I can effectively use this with MySQL because I have done it with other applications. I looked up some error messages in the MS Knowledgebase and there appears to be a "hotfix" but Microsoft isn't responding. I have carefully checked all dependencies and my install package installs all that I can find.
