Need a program that will redirect all initial HTTP traffic from new clients on the LAN to a particular URL or IP. This is to be used in a wireless hotspot environment so when a new user joins the wireless LAN and uses their browser to go somewhere the first page he/she gets is our predetermined URL, after that they can visit any websites they want as normal unless they disconnect/reconnect or obtain a new DHCP lease. One method I thought to accomplish this would be to set the DHCP options for the LAN such that the windows machine running this program would answer to DNS requests, returning any initial request as the IP of our webserver running the special page and any subsequent requests forwarded on to a legitimate DNS server that would fulfill the request correctly (our ISP’s DNS server). Another method might be some kind of HTTP proxy or DHCP update, but I leave the solution in your capable hands! Please see attachment for a description of the LAN setup. The Netgear device was selected to perform NAT and for it’s keyword URL blocking features and logging capabilities at an affordable price. DHCP and DNS is running on the Win2K server because I have greater control & flexibility that way over the Netgear services. Please understand, this program is to run on the server, not the client. Clients can be configured/manipulated automatically only via DHCP or some ASP page I suppose. Clients range from 95 to XP, perhaps even a non-windows or non-IE user but that doesn’t concern me for right now. The program needs to be able to accomplish some kind of HTTP redirect on the server side, we do not want to publish instructions or have the ability to modify clients of the LAN that may come and go, it should be fully automatic from their perspective.
