Hi there. I'd consider creating a separate plugin to do this. Searching by post types is easy enough, the plugin can be responsible for rendering your search box (or integrating with the existing one?) and displaying results etc. The plugin should be seamless, as in if it's disabled it doesn't negatively affect the site, it just doesn't appear. The problem with WordPress is that things can become incompatible at any time no matter how diligent you are (although it's easy enough to make the chances of that extremely small and plugin is a great way to create isolated functionality that is far less likely to be affected by or to affect other functionality). The only really complicated part is if the WooCommerce and WP Catalog searches must act as one. Not sure if that's what you intend to do.
