Teach me how to use bitcoind with PHP

I tried to do this already with a LAMP stack and EasyBitcoin-PHP but couldn't get any of the calls to work.

I think I setup the RPC username and password correctly but I get nothing from $bitcoin->getinfo(); and all PHP after that line stops working. I also tried getbalance and a few others. My node was pretty far from fully synced but bitcoin-cli would show the current block and balance, so I don't think that was the problem.

At this point I gave up and deleted my VM with all my progress. I'm open to getting a development server but if you could just walk me through it on my laptop that would be great. Screensharing and IM preferred.

This is the start of many similar projects. If you are good, I will keep you busy.
