The assessment task is to prepare a series of illustrations and complementary text in the form of a
design and access statement for a public realm improvement project. Students will be able to select
the site, with approval from the module leader. The submitted work will demonstrate an understanding
of the site and site context, explore different design options for the space and work up a detailed design
which embodies the principles of good design and placemaking.
Your proposals will need to be presented via a design and access statement that will need to introduce,
explain and fully justify your proposals and include the following:
An explanation of the space and its context. This should encompass physical, social and
economic factors, and provide analysis of relevant planning policy.
A summary of the design options explored as part of the design process, and how these options
relate to the contextual analysis and development precedents.
A detailed design of the space, which includes the layout, materials, street furniture, key routes
and uses, landscaping and any other amenities/play space, including an explanation of the
design principles and concepts that have been applied to the detailed design. This should
include an analysis on how relevant access issues have been dealt with through the
development and an assessment of how the scheme promotes equality and inclusiveness.
An appropriate amount of detail, and justification, concerning the use, amount, layout, scale,
landscaping and appearance of the scheme. Consideration over energy and environmental
matters should also be included.
Your statement should be professionally produced and presented. It should primarily use visual material to
explain and justify the analysis and design. Text should be secondary, providing supporting information
only. The report should be visually interesting and contain an appropriate mix of diagrams, plans,
photographs and sketches. The expectation will be for this visual material to be your own but if you include
the work of others it must be properly acknowledged using the UWE Harvard referencing system. Text
should not exceed 3,000 but there is no page limit. A word count should be included on the front page of
your submission.
Your submission should be sized at A3 with a landscape orientation being the most probable given the
dimensions of the site. Please ensure your student ID appears on all pages. Your statement should include:
