Optimize website to reduce load time

I need to optimize the load time of a website (2 language versions). These are self hosted wordpress sites. I am mainly looking for somebody with previous experience optimizing websites so they load fast. I have run a diagnostic on the site homepage and one internal pages, and it seems the most important elements to consider are to reduce the number of objects (about 40-45 on the "heavier" pages). There are 16 scripts (js and javascipt) and 4 css files. Apparently somebody with the right knowledge and experience would know how to group the scripts and css into fewer number of files, and also know how to compress these files (gzip).
