Actually building a membership website may have its pros and cons based on the type of membership website you would want to achieve at end of the day. That is if you want a situation where users will just register and even post articles on your website without necessarily connecting to the admin dashboard. On the other hand if you want to sell subscriptions, paid content or digital downloads will require a more robust Wordpress plugin.
