Graphic mesh, tearing hole thru screen

I eventually want an animated cartoon animal, like a talking moose, to appear to tear a horizonal cut in the computer screen, through the desktop, and stick it's head through. But at the moment, I'm just researching this for feasibility. For now, I'd like a 3D mesh that starts as a flat plane (before) and ends up something like my mock-up picture shows (After), with a hole in the 3D mesh with a giraffe's neck sticking through.? You would model in 3D, how the mesh would end up, but not showing the giraffe. Try to model a material that forms folds and ripples, stretches somewhat, and tears slightly.? The plane should have a front and back side, and appear to have a real-but-slender thickness.? I'm intending the? outer surface to get a texture applied that exactly matches a screen-capture. The inner surface will look like innards of an LCD screen (but you don't need you go this texturing, but you can if you like, for fun.) Desired endpoint is some graphic files, photoshop, jpeg, gif, etc, as well as 3D mesh files.. something useable easily by DirectX3D and/or OpenGL.? Eg., .X files, .obj, etc.? I'm exploring a transition from 2D to 3D, starting with options for getting rid of the solid background color and have the Moose pop-out of the screen directly. Hence this very simple research project, to get a 3D mesh that can simulate a tear in the desktop screen, to see if I like the effect, or not.
