Update WordPress to a new theme

We have a fully functional WordPress website but we are looking to upgrade to a new theme. I have a ElegantTheme zipped theme that we purchased and it is installed on our server. However, when I activate it something is wrong and the theme does not look correct. We are unable to get the images to work within the slider and it seems the css is off as well. We used this theme on other sites so it is not a theme problem, it seems to be a problem with our wordpress, possibly from changes made from prior updates to our current theme.
